This policy explains what personal data The Sceptic’s Desk collects, why, and what you can do about it. It is written to be read rather than skimmed past, which is the whole point of a policy.

The name field is optional. If you leave it blank, the emails say “there” instead, and nothing else changes.
Purchases are handled by Gumroad, which acts as merchant of record and as its own data controller for payment data. Your card details are never seen by, or stored on, any system belonging to The Sceptic’s Desk. Gumroad passes across your email address and the details of what you bought, so that the product can be delivered and supported. Gumroad’s own privacy policy governs what it does with the rest.
The site sets no cookies, runs no advertising trackers, and loads no third-party fonts or scripts. The typefaces are embedded in the stylesheet precisely so that no request goes to an external font service. Web server logs kept by the hosting provider may record standard technical information such as IP address and browser type, which is ordinary operational logging rather than anything we look at.

MailerLite processes data within the European Economic Area. Gumroad, GitHub, and Cloudflare are US-based and may process data outside the UK, relying on the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or equivalent safeguards.
Your email address stays on the list until you unsubscribe, or until it stops being deliverable. If you unsubscribe, the record is retained in suppressed form so that you are not accidentally re-added, which is a requirement of the same law that gave you the right to leave. Ask for full erasure and it will be done, with the suppression caveat explained above.
Purchase records are kept for six years, which is what UK tax law requires.

If you are unhappy with how a request was handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. We would rather you raised it with us first, but it is your right either way.
This material is intended for adults. The mailing list is not knowingly open to anyone under 18, and any address identified as belonging to a child will be removed.
If this policy changes materially, the date at the top changes with it, and anyone on the mailing list is told by email rather than left to notice.
